8 DAYS IN JUNE: CREATIVITY OUT OF CONFLICT
Since the beginning of time conflict has been the biggest force in shaping the world in which we live. In the midst of racial, religious, political and personal conflicts, artists have produced astonishing works. Chaos can breed beauty. MOCAD is partnering with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) and the College for Creative Studies (CCS) to present a special collaborative effort, 8 Days in June - Creation out of Conflict.
Artwork will be created for the festival by local artists, including Gil Ashby, Alex Grossfeld, Scott Northrup, Mathew Pritchard, Derek Roberts, Derek Schultz and Haewon Yoo. These works will be on display at MOCAD and at the Max M. Fisher Music Center.

wordMusic: A SOUND PERFORMANCE OF PERCUSSION AND POETRY
(in English and German)
wordMusic was founded by Esther Dischereit in 1995. Her poetry frees words and allows them to expand, attach to furniture, close doors, create fields of interwoven space. Since the founding of wordMusic, Dischereit has worked together with the percussionist, performer, and composer Ray Kaczynsi. His beats, melodic rhythms, and humorous and ironic cascades form musical installations that tell their own stories. wordMusic is about the language of music and the sound of language. Kaczynski plays percussion. Dischereit plays words. Together they create duets both boisterous and delicate. Rhythms become melodies, the text takes over the rhythm. wordMusic is an improvised meeting of sounds.
This event is sponsored by German
and Slavic Studies, the Uwe K. Faulhaber Endowment for Applied German Studies, the Foreign Film Nites Series of the Foreign Language Technology Center, the Cohn-Haddow-Center for Judaic Studies, the English
Department, the Humanities Center, the History
Department, and the Study Group for Diasporic Avant-Gardes of Wayne
State University.

Opening Reception: Shrinking Cities
at Cranbrook Art Museum and MOCAD
Shrinking Cities, a project by Germany's Federal
Cultural Foundation, the Kulturstiftung des Bundes, explores
a form of urban development that has become a global phenomenon.
Starting in 2002, local teams were commissioned in Detroit
(USA), Manchester/Liverpool (Britain), Ivanovo (Russia),
and Halle/Leipzig (Germany) to investigate and document processes
of urban shrinking. In more than fifty exhibition contributions,
artists, architects, filmmakers, journalists, culture experts,
and sociologists reveal and illuminate the changing realities
of these cities.
