You must be over the age of 18 to volunteer at MOCAD.

Download Application (MS Word Document)

Enthusiastic and responsible volunteers are a vital component in the day-to-day operations at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. Volunteering at MOCAD is a great way to get involved with the community, be part of a fun team, and interact with museum visitors, employees, and special guests in a variety of ways. MOCAD strives to provide our volunteers with an interesting and rewarding learning experience.

We offer many different volunteering opportunities, including being a MOCAD Visitor Services Volunteer, Administrative Assistant, a Special Events Volunteer, an Education Assistant, Museum Store Assistant, Installation Volunteer, or an ArtHead.

Most volunteers should be available to commit to working a weekly shift of between 4 and 6 hours, and are always welcome to work more. Alternatives to committing to a weekly shift are available for those whose schedule may not allow it.

Visitor Services Greet and welcome visitors at entrance, provide exhibition materials, answer questions, provide information and directions. Use clicker to count visitors upon their entrance to the museum. Greeters answer the telephone and facilitate callers' questions. They also assist staff in various capacities of exhibition maintenance.

Administrative Assistants Provide clerical assistance, including: answering phones, checking voicemail and routing messages, addressing and stuffing envelopes for mailings, maintaining mailing list and membership databases, copying, faxing, filing, etc...

Event Assistants Welcome, greet, and direct patrons, take tickets, provide instructions and information, serve as gallery guards, help with membership sales, and other assistance as needed.

Education Assistants Volunteer on Sundays and assist our Education Coordinator and Interns during Family Day programming. This includes setting up tables and art supplies, working with the Coordinator and Interns to ensure a safe and productive atmosphere for families with children working on arts and crafts projects. These volunteers will also have to opportunity to assist with other education programming.

Store Assistants Help with sales and inventory (as needed), and general assistance during special events.

Installation Assistants Work hand-in-hand with the exhibition coordinator and a team of volunteers, outside of regular museum hours, to complete the installation and teardown of exhibitions. These volunteers will be asked to commit as much time as possible during two-to-three week periods between exhibitions to help ensure that the MOCAD exhibition installation process runs smoothly and is completed by specific deadlines.

MOCAD Installation Assistants may become as involved in the installation process as they wish. Tasks may include unpacking or packing work with the registrar, building and/or painting walls, handling and hanging artwork, hook-up of audio-visual equipment, and much more.

Artheads Give tours of the MOCAD featured exhibitions to children and adults. The ArtHead Program provides continuing education in contemporary art through guide training sessions, lectures by curators and artists, and ongoing study.
